Very Olde St. Nick “Superfreak” 11 Year – Preet Liquor Pick

“Preet Liquor & Friends Store Pick”

A friend invited me over to try a pour of the Very Olde St. Nick Superfreak 11+ year Kentucky bourbon. He loved the pour and said he thought it would be a bourbon of the year contender. And after tasting it, I have to agree, it is a fabulous pour. He had a Preet’s Liquor store pick but I learned afterward that there are several variations of the Superfreak which I explain at the end of the article.

Very Olde St. Nick “Superfreak” 11 Year – Preet Liquor Pick Review

My tasting reviews are unique in that I include the notes of several well-known whiskey critics. The hope is that this format will help me and others to explore and expand their tasting experience. After you have taken your own tasting notes, read the reviews and see if there is a flavor note that others discerned that now you can detect as well.

Legs

Beads formed on the crown at about 10 seconds and began to fall as tears at about 20 seconds. The first tears reached the bowl of the glass at about 51 seconds.

Nose

Lots of dark aromas! Dark cherry, dried fig, brown sugar, buttersctch, maple syrup, dark graham cracker, old oak, toasted hazelnuts, old leather, chocolate.

Other Reviewer’s Perceptions

Bourbon Forage Fishing: The nose is perfect. Echoes of Russell’s 15 and Wild Turkey Beacon. A beautiful, savory corn that goes into a caramel. Some legit grape drink cola and some rye spice. Grape with a dusty peanut.

Palate

Dark caramel, very dark honey, cinnamon, a hint of nutmeg, a hint of cola, dark chocolate, molasses, barrel char, a hint of fig, dark dried cherry, leather. Lots of savory notes!

Other Reviewer’s Perceptions

Bourbon Forage Fishing: Peanut up front, tons of beautiful rye spice and sugar with the typical (Wild Turkey) dusty peanut on the finish. And then it just rolls into that beautiful typical wild turkey grape drink cherry lozenge. Oh man that’s good. That is such a crushable bottle. This is very dark, very viscous, tremendous mouth feel. Very elite mouthful feel. This is a very unique bourbon.

My analysis of this is it’s a Wild Turkey, like an old Wild Turkey, like maybe a 17-year old Turkey blended with some 11 year MGP and maybe another MGP.

Finish

Exceptionaly long finish with old oak, dark chocolate, leather, tobacco, and coffee. It is very viscous and pleasurable.

Other Reviewer’s Perceptions

Bourbon Forage Fishing: Cherry grape lozenge vidbes on the finish. Very viscous, tremendous mouthfeel.

Mouthfeel

The mouthfeel is very viscous and Rich.

Mouthfeel Rating Guide: Thin = Watery | Silken = smooth & slippery, but not mouth coating | Creamy = coats the tongue like heavy cream does. | Rich or Unctuous = coats the entire palate like quality olive oil

The Burn

The alcohol burn is Average. This means that the burn from the alcohol is about what I would expect it to be for a pour that is 114.4 proof.

The Burn Rating Guide:
Very Low = it drinks like it is a much lower proof
Low = it drinks like it is a little lower proof
Average = the heat is about what I would expect
Hot = it is hotter than what I would expect
Scorching! = it drinks much hotter than what I would expect

Tasting Summary

The Very Olde St. Nick Superfreak by Preets hits the palate first with complex flavors of savory and sweet notes. Old leather, dried fruit, old oak, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and dried figs. It is wonderfully balanced between savory, sweet, and baking spice. Complex and alluring.

My Rating – 9.1

The higher the score the better the whiskey is in my opinion. For reference, my best rated bottle so far is the George T. Stagg 2022 (138.7p) with a score of 9.7.

Very Olde St. Nick “SuperFreak” Variations Explained

Very Olde St. Nick “SuperFreak” is a limited-release Kentucky bourbon produced in extremely small batches by Preservation Distillery. Bottled at cask strength and built from mature bourbon stocks, SuperFreak has developed a reputation among collectors for its age, scarcity, and heavily oak-driven profile.

Unlike many allocated bourbons that are released in large annual batches, SuperFreak is produced from only 1 – 3 barrels at a time. As a result, there are slight differences between releases, even though they share the same name and overall concept.

Batch Proof Variations

The standard SuperFreak release is typically created from a small blend of 3 mature barrels, often incorporating both 11-year and older bourbon stocks. Because the whiskey is bottled at barrel proof without chill filtration, the final proof naturally varies from batch to batch. Releases fall within the 114 – 117 proof range.

Single Barrel Store Picks

In addition to the standard micro-batch release, a few retailers, such as Preet’s Liquor, have received single-barrel versions of SuperFreak. These bottlings come from an individual barrel rather than a multi-barrel blend, resulting in differences in proof, oak influence, sweetness, and overall flavor profile.

For collectors, these store picks can be particularly interesting because they showcase how individual barrels differ from the standard blended release.

Age Composition Differences

Although SuperFreak is generally associated with bourbon ranging from approximately 11 to 18 years of age, the exact barrel composition may vary from batch to batch. Although they all carry the 11+ year age statement, some releases appear to emphasize younger mature stocks of around 15 years, while others incorporate a larger percentage of older 18 year whiskey that contributes additional oak, leather, dark caramel, and aged bourbon characteristics.

For buyers comparing multiple bottles, the proof listed on the label is often the easiest way to distinguish one batch from another. Since production volumes are extremely limited, each release should be viewed as a unique snapshot rather than an identical annual product.

Final Thoughts

Very Olde St. Nick SuperFreak is best viewed as a series of ultra-small-batch and single-barrel releases rather than a single fixed expression. While the overall profile remains focused on mature bourbon, cask-strength proof, and extensive oak influence, individual batches and single-barrel selections can offer noticeably different experiences. For enthusiasts who enjoy comparing variations within a label, those differences are part of the appeal.
