Thomas H Handy Release Dates and Proofs

Thomas H Handy Rye Whiskey is a small batch, allocated, highly sought after whiskey produced by Buffalo Trace Distillery and is released once a year as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. It gives homage to Thomas H. Handy (1839-1893), who purchased the Sazerac Coffee House in 1869 in New Orleans, which eventually was renamed the Sazerac Company.

The Sazerac Coffee House and Sazerac Company name celebrates the famous Sazerac cocktail created in the mid-1800s, which featured a Cognac called Sazerac de Forge et Fils along with Peychaud’s Bitters, Herbsaint absinthe, and sugar. In around 1880, Sazerac de Forge et Fils became unavailable, so the Cognac in the Sazerac cocktail was replaced with an American Rye Whiskey. Capitalizing on the continued popularity of the Sazerac cocktail, in the early 1900s the Sazerac Company created American Rye Whiskey that was called Sazerac Rye Whiskey.
